Hi, I am travelling to Japan end of April and unsure whether buying the JR pass. Regional passes or individual train tickets is best?

My itinerary is:
April 26 - Arriving Tokyo - Stay Tokyo
2 May- Travel Tokyo to Hakata - stay Hakata
6 May - Travel and stay Osaka (day trips to Kyoto and Kobe)
10 May - Travel Osaka to takayama
11 May - day trip to Shirakawago - stay takayama
12 May- travel Takayama to Tokyo via Nagoya
Stay Tokyo until 19 May

Any advice on whether I should consider JR pass or a regional pass such as Kansai Hokuriku with purchase of seperate tickets to cover Tokyo to hakata and Nagoya to Tokyo?

Also, with my travel commencement during golden week, will I be able to make a seat reservation from Tokyo to Hakata on 2 May? I plan to book it after arriving in Japan on 27 April.

Thanks

Alexis

Hi there,

You'll save money if you purchase a 14-day pass and have it activated between 2-12 of May. From then, you can choose whether you want the rest of your pass to be valid during your initial or final stay in Tokyo, as the JR Pass covers the Yamanote Metro line which covers central Tokyo. Alternatively, with a 21-day pass you'll spend a bit more but it may come out to be worth it if you plan on using the Tokyo Yamanote line on multiple days.

Hope this helps!

Alexis
