JR Pass for given itinerary?

Hi There

My wife, bub (8 months old) and I will be travelling to Japan very soon and our itinerary is as follows:

19/3 Arrive Haneda Airport and staying in Shinjuku
22/3 Shinjuku - Yokohama - Shinjuku
24/3 Shinjuki - Kyoto (may stop around Mt Fuji?)
28/3 Kyoto - Hiroshima
29/3 Hiroshima - Miyajima
30/3 Miyajima - Osaka
3/4 Depart Kansai Airport

During our stay in Kyoto or Osaka, we may plan day trips to Nara / Okayama / Himeji / Hikone if bub permits.

We are contemplating the 14 day JR Pass and activating it 2 days into our trip seeing that our stay in Japan is 16 days. Would we getting our moneys worth even if we don't do those side trips?

Hi there!

Instead of a 14 day JR Pass I would recommend using a 7 day JR Pass for the period 24/3 to 30/3, this way you can use the JR Pass for all your expansive travel and you'll be sure of good savings.

Here's a little list of normal ticket price

Shinjuku - Kyoto ¥ 13,020
Kyoto - Hiroshima ¥ 10,590
Hiroshima - Osaka ¥ 10,220

For a total of ¥ 33,830 or ¥ 5,530 in savings as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300. This is excluding any side trips you may make. The 14 day JR Pass could also be of use but it would really depend on additional travel.

Is the JR Pass usable within the metro/subway lines in Kyoto?

Hi TM,

Unfortunately you can't use the JR Pass on the Metro. However you can use local trains around the city.
These are useful to a limited extend for travel to places such as Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama.
