Do we need JR passes?

Thanks, could you please help me fine-tune my travel expenses and find out if it's worth buying a 15-day pass as long as we we're travelling by train not all the time but on certain days dispersed throughout the trip:
- Day 6, 26 April, from Tokyo to Takayama - Day 9, from from Kanazawa to Kyoto - Days 12 and 13, 2 and 3 May: day trips to Osaka and Nara from Kyoto - Day 14, 4 May, from Kyoto to Koyasan. - Day 15, 5 May, from Koyasan to Naoshima (via Himeji Castle) - Day 17, 7 May, from Naoshima to Hiroshima, - Day 18, 8 May, from Hiroshima to Tokyo

Is the pass used for fixed dates, e.g. from 1 to 7 May, or it's valid for a month and can be used for 7 days within than time.
