NOZOMI line

Hi Katz,

To look up ticket prices for any route in Japan I would recommend using Hyperdia which provides you with detailed route information including the price for a first (green) or second (ordinary) class ticket. I've looked up the route Tokyo - Kyoto to get you started. As you can see the the price for a normal ticket is ¥ 13,520 and Green Class is ¥ 18,160.

For this itinerary I would strongly recommend a JR Pass, given that you would be back in Tokyo by 7 days. The 7 day JR Pass is only 28,300yen and you can make some amazing savings with it over normal tickets. Do note that the Nozomi is not included but you can use the Hikari or Kodama trains instead that travel the exact same route as the Nozomi but make a couple more stops on the way.

You could either opt for the 14 day JR Pass which is about the same price as the above travel or buy normal tickets and travel with the Nozomi. The advantage of the JR Pass is that you get unlimited travel on the JR for the entire duration of your trip. This will give you great flexibility for instance if you chance plans at the last moment.
