Hi there,
If you're most expensive train journeys can be fit into a 7-day period (e.g. Shinkansen to Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima etc.) , I would suggest purchasing a JR Pass. If not, it's unlikely that it'll be your most cost effective option.
