hi,

planning on the following itinerary with 2 adults and 3 kids (13, 11, and 9 years old):

Day 1: Arrive Narita and fly to Chitose Airport
Day 2: Chitose
Day 3: Chitose - Toyako
Day 4: Toyako
Day 5: Toyako - Sapporo
Day 6: Sapporo
Day 7: Sapporo - Otatru - Sapporo
Day 8: Sapporo - Tokyo
Day 9 - Day 13: Tokyo
Day 14: Depart Narita

Do you recommend that we purchase a JR Pass or a Hokkaido JR Pass?

What is the most economical way to fly Narita - Chitose? Have seen some cheap airline tickets via Jetstar or Vanilla Air that flying is really a good option.

Is getting a JR Pass for the entire trip including taking a shinkansen to Hokkaido instead of flying a wise decision? If yes, can we make do with a 7 day JR Pass?

Looking forward to a response. Thank you in advance.

Hi there,

Travel from Sapporo - Tokyo takes around 10 hours of train travel, so it's a very long day on the train. Given that you only have 2 weeks in Japan, I would advise flying at least one way. Airplane tickets change price by the day and I can't really give you a price comparison because of that. Generally it is better to book sooner than later though. Jetstar and Peach airways are Japanese budget airlines and worth checking out.

A JR Pass can easily pay off then traveling by rail, compared to buying normal rail tickets. As a one way ticket Tokyo - Sapporo almost is the same price as a 7 day JR Pass.

You could look at a 7 day JR Pass and use it from day 5 - 12 and travel back by rail. You could consider making a stop at Hakodate or somewhere in Tohoku to split up the travel time.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
