route planning with JR Pass - Alpine route

Hi there,

Im struggling to piece together a route as follows using the JR Pass:

Tokyo - 1 day
Hakone - 1 day
Alpine route - starting Shinano-Omachi side - 1 day
finishing alpine route at Tateyama
Kyoto/Nara - 4 days
possible osaka
Tokyo/ Nikko - 4 days

From what I see it isn not really possible based on the long journey times between the alpine starting and finishing points especially. We would like to do some Hiking as part of this trip and use the bullet trains as much as possible to cut down travel time and stops. Appreciate any guidance you can offer.

Hello there,

I think you've already laid most of the ground work, now it is just a matter of filling in the details.

For instance, the hardest part will be to travel from Hakone to Shinano-Omachi, the route takes nearly 6 hours: http://bit.ly/2tyw81e I can imagine that you'd be a bit tired already when you arrive there. Some maybe it is best to travel near Shinano-Omachi, stay there overnight and start fresh in the morning.

From there everything seems very amicable.

For travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included.
