Hi,

Is the following itinerary possible using the Japan Rail Pass? I'm also keen to learn your thoughts about the duration of stay in each place. Too overwhelming?

The dates are in December.

Day 1: Airport to hotel (Tokyo)
Day 2: Tokyo
Day 3: Train to Nikko. (Fast train?) Overnight stay. Longer needed? It will be winter.
Day 4: Train to Kyoto. (Shinkansen)
Day 5: Kyoto
Day 6: Kyoto
Day 7: Kyoto
Day 8: Train to Tokyo
Day 9: Tokyo
Day 10: Tokyo
Day 11: Tokyo
Day 12: Tokyo
Day 13: Fly out.

Hello there,

The JR Pass can be used with your itinerary and you can make outstanding savings compared to purchasing normal tickets. Add to that using the Shinkansen and you are set to go!

Generally I advise visiting Nikko as a day trip, so spending one night there is perfectly fine. The JR Pass can be used for the Shinkansen to Nikko (the last part is by local train) and to Kyoto.

Hi Jane,

I think it would be nice to include a side trip from Kyoto to Nara.

Also let me know if you have any special interest, this way I can give you more specific recommendations.
