16 day trip advice

hello, we are planning trip in Oct 16-Nov 2 arriving Haneda airport. Below is our itinerary & as we are on very tight budget, how do you propose if we purchase 7-day JR pass. We are 3 Adult.

  • Day 1-8 Focus on Tokyo city, Nikko
  • Day 9 Hakone
  • Day 10 Kyoto
  • Day 11 Kyoto
  • Day 12 Kyoto
  • Day 13 Osaka
  • Day 14 Osaka
  • Day 15 Kanasawa
  • Day 16 Return to Tokyo

How do we maximise the use of 7-day J pass on above itinerary as the rest of travelling can be via
normal train. Much appreciate your advice before we purchase the JR pass. Thanks much.

Hi Emily,

That looks like quite a trip!

I'd certainly aim to activate my Japan Rail Pass on day 9 to get the most value out of it. This will let you do a lot of travel in the 7 days.

If you are a little bit flexible, I can suggest 2 things:

  1. You might consider a day return trip to Hiroshima from Kyoto while you are there?
  2. I've found the trip to Nikko from Tokyo to be quite expensive in the past, so If you can reduce one of your Kyoto (or Osaka) days, you could go to Nikko on day-9, and use the JRPass for that leg too (saving about ¥5,000 per person on the train fare).
