JR Pass 網上支付變得更加安全

Important change for European customers.

Due to the European Union’s Second Payment Services Directive (PSD2), your online payments will become even more secure and may require additional verification. This means that when paying with a card, your identity will be verified by strong authentication processes introduced by your issuing bank, to verify that you are the owner of the bank/card account. We have to do this to make sure that the transaction will be secure and the risk of fraud will be further reduced.

From September 14th, 2019, online purchases may require further identification through your bank’s online portal, depending on the bank you will be asked to provide two out of three authentication elements.

These are:
Something you know (e.g. password, PIN)
Something you have (e.g. card, mobile or hardware token)
Something you are (e.g. fingerprint or face recognition)

To prepare for the new authentication processes, please make sure your card is registered with your bank and your bank has the most up-to-date contact details on record. Your bank may decline a payment if records are not up-to-date or your account is not set-up with the right verification tools.

What should I do if a payment fails?

First check if all card details were entered correctly (Name, card number, expiry date, CVC). If you were prompted with an extra verification step, make sure the correct directions are followed (e.g. like entered the correct token), then try again. If the problem persists, it is generally easiest to try using a different card. Should you still experience issues, then we recommend contacting your bank for more information concerning the authentication processes.

Does this change anything for the JR Pass usage or use in Japan?

No, the extra verification is only used once at point of online payment.
