So I land in Japan on May 10th at 820am and leave on the 25th of May.
I want to spend some number of days in Tokyo before going to Kyoto then I want to go hiking somewhere else (not sure yet) before returning to Tokyo for my outbound flight.
Could anyone give me a rough cost comparison between getting a 14 day pass and booking ordinarily?

It's hard to give you a price breakdown without a full itinerary. To give you an idea of costs, a return Tokyo - Osaka is ¥ 29,300 with the Shinkansen. While a 7 day JR Pass for instance is ¥ 29,100.
A 14 day JR Pass is ¥ 46,390 so you would have to do at least this amount in travel costs for the pass to pay off. Let me know once you have a better idea of where you would like to go hiking and I can give you a better overview.
