We are traveling to Japan in late June and will be there for 2 weeks. We defiantly want to use the rail pass as we will be moving around quit a lot.
When is the earliest I can purchase the rail pass if I don't want to activate it until June 20th? Can I use my American Express to pay for the passes (I want the skymlles:) Does it cost extra to reserve seats? Is travel insurance offered for rail passes?

Hi there,
You can buy the pass up to 90 days before activating it, this is on 22nd of march if you plan on using it on the 20th of June. Once you have the pass, you can make seat reservations for free!
The JR-Pass does not come with travel insurance, not do we offer it but it may be covered by your own travel insurance in case it is stolen/lost, I would recommend inquiring with the company beforehand.
As far as I am aware, we currently do not accept AMEX cards but I am double checking that for you now :)

I'm afraid we do not accept Amex, but do accept credit and debit Visa or Mastercard.
