Hello,
Our itinerary in Japan for 9 May is:

D1 arrive morning in Tokyo
D2 D3 Tokyo
D4 Tokyo to Hakone
D5 Hakone to Kyoto
D6 D7 Kyoto
D8 Kyoto to Tokyo Narita Airport

Does it makes sense to buy the 7-day JR pass? And if so, which day should I activate the pass?
I will go by Romancecar from Tokyo to Hakone and also buy the Hakone free pass.

Hello there,

Let's have a look at ticket prices and find out.

Hakone (Odawara station) - Kyoto ¥ 12,080
Kyoto - Tokyo ¥ 13,600
Tokyo - Narita Airport ¥ 3,020

For a total of ¥ 28,700 the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110 so you are close in terms of price. The JR Pass is also good for local travel in Tokyo on local JR lines and you could also consider using the Shinkansen to Hakone instead of the Odakyu line to make more savings.
