hi there
planning a 10 days trip to japan from March 27th to April 6th

1)Starting in Tokyo for 3 nights
2)On 31st leaving tokyo in the morning planning to take bullet train to KYOTO
3) staying in kyoto 2 nights then getting train to osaka for 2nights

this bit is where I am having trouble

4)leave osaka on 4th in the morning to head back to tokyo but we would like to stop at mount fuji and hakone and spend the day there and then get to tokyo by 9pm as we have a flight on the morning of the 5th bck to UK

Will it be worth getting the JR pass for this itinery ?
and also How do we get from OSAKA to mount Fuji making the most of the JR pass and then onto Tokyo ?

Your help and advise is much appreciated
Thank you

Hi there!

A 7 day JR Pass costs about the same as a return between Tokyo and Osaka so I'd say based on your itinerary you'll break even with the 7 day JRPass at least, and possibly make good savings if you include a trip to/from Narita and also other trips within your plans. For Hakone/Fuji you'll want to stop at Odawara on the way back to Tokyo and use the non-JR Odakyu lines up to Hakone.

Without knowing more about your trip it's hard to give 100% perfect advice, but knowing you'll be travelling to Kyoto on the 31st and return to Tokyo on the 4th your basic cost analysis will be:

  1. Tokyo > Kyoto: ¥13,020 (164mins, 513km)
  2. Kyoto > Osaka: ¥540 (28mins, 42km)
  3. Osaka > Odawara: ¥12,270 (159mins, 472km)
  4. Odawara > Tokyo: ¥3,440 (35mins, 83km)
  5. Tokyo > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥3,140 (58mins, 79km)

JR ticket cost: ¥32,410 for 5 legs

For information here's a map of your JR stops on a Japan Rail Pass map.

Hope this helps!
