Our family is going to travel to Japan next month (December 2018). Itinerary as follows:

1. Osaka (KIX direct to Shin-Osaka) (stay 2 nights)
2. Kanazawa (with one day trip to Shirakawa-go and another day trip to Nagano) (stay 3 nights)
3. Takayama (stay 2 nights)
4. Nagoya (stay 3 nights)
5. Kyoto (stay 2 nights then direct to KIX).

We intend to buy 5 day Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass to either cover train journey from Shin-Osaka to Kanazawa or to cover train journey from Takayama to Nagoya. Please advise whether to start the pass at Shin-Osaka to Kanazawa or the next day at Kanazawa.

For the rest of journeys apart from the above mentioned 5 days pass, we intend to buy Shinkansen train fare from Nagoya to Kyoto & from Toyama to Nagano return and Limited Express from either Takayama to Nagoya or Shin-Osaka to Kanazawa depending on your advice. In addition, we need to buy Limited Express from Kansai International Airport (KIX) to Shin-Osaka and from Kyoto to KIX.

Pleas kindly advise is there any other more cost effective pass to cover the above train journeys?
