hello,
all the questions are similar and i have a similar question too! and even now thanks for the info!

so i am arriving on the 6th of february to narita and leaving on the 23rd from narita.

i am planning to visit hiroshima, osaka, kyoto -somewhere else?! and of course tokyo.

my rough plan is like this

6-7 tokyo
8-9-10 hiroshima
10-11-12-13 kyoto
14-15 osaka
16-17-18-19 I DONT KNOW WHERE - I DEFINITELY NEED A RECOMENDATION FOR THIS TIME PERIOD :)
20-21-22 tokyo
23 flight back from narita.

from kyoto and osaka i will make day trips

and i think 5 days in tokyo is ok for tokyo itself - not the surroundings..

so should stay within tokyo area and make day trip with the railpass?
i also want to see the ocean maybe for two day in that time period, where should i go?

so it would look like this
6-7 tokyo
8-9-10 hiroshima
10-11-12-13 kyoto (and surroundings)
14-15 osaka (and surroundings)
16-17 SOMEWHERE near ocean maybe?!
18-19 TOKYO SURROUNDINGS?? (fuji 5 lakes, yokohama??)
20-21-22 tokyo itself
23 flight back

and when should i start my pass? as soon as i arrive to narita? or one day later? because last 3 days i will be in tokyo anyways.

and with all those routes the rail pass pays it off, right?
by the way, and when moving between kyoto-osaka and surroundings, i can still use the jr pass, right?

thanks in advance!

Hi Begum,

First of all I think you are planning a nice trip to Japan and will have a nice amount of time to travel around. With travels to Hiroshima and Osaka you will already have covered the cost of your 14 day JRPass so all the extra travel will add up to some nice savings!

I would recommend using it on the first day (the 6th) and use it to ride the Narita Express into Tokyo. The pass will than be valid until the 19th so you can use it for day trips from Tokyo as well. Some great destinations for this include, Nikko, Kamakura and Yokohama. Fuji and the 5 lakes is served by a different company other than JR so you can't use the rail pass to get there but maybe it is a good idea to visit it after your pass runs out.

Yes you can use your JR-Pass on for travel on Local JR lines in and around Osaka and Kyoto and also to Nara for instance.

As for a recommendation for the 16th/17th, consider a visit to Kinosaki Onsen which is a very lovely small town. Also you can sea the ocean if you go just north of it. From there you can also access the JR Sanin Honsen line that follows the coastline of upper Japan and the scenery that the train passes is very beautiful.

An other place where you can see the ocean beautifully is Kagoshima, this city is all the way south in Kyushu, so it may be a little of out the way for you. If you are interested you could plan it in after Osaka and than Kinosaki-onsen instead of the Tokyo Surroundings.

Enjoy Japan!
-Daniel
