My husband and I will be traveling to Japan for the first time from April 10-18. We will fly into Narita, and take a train to Tokyo. Then we will explore Tokyo until April 15, when we would like to take a bullet train to Kyoto. Can you tell me what type of Rail tickets I would need to buy? Should we buy a JR Pass? If so, I see that there are 7 and 14 day options - what would we do for the extra day?

What about after Kyoto? Will you be returning to Tokyo? or traveling on perhaps to Hiroshima? Depending on that a 7 day JR Pass could be a really good option.

Thank you for your reply! We will be traveling back to Tokyo to fly out of Narita to return home after Kyoto. So, basically, train to Kyoto on April 15, then back to Tokyo on April 18. I see that a round trip ticket is almost the cost of the JR Pass.... so thinking it makes sense to get one.

Yes, a 7 day JR Pass will be a good option if you can cover a return to Kyoto. Any additional travel, such as to Narita Airport, is was you would save :)
