Hi
We are travelling to Japan for a 3 week trip , a group of 4 adults
This is our itinerary
Arrive Osaka , 3 days inc 1 trip to Nara
Travel to Tokyo stay for 5 nights
Travel to Hiroshima, 3 nights inc travel to Miyajima and overnight stay
Travel to Onomichi
Travel to Kyoto 4 nights stay
Travel to Hakone 3 nights travel to the airport
I think we have calculated there are too many gaps for a JR pass to be worthwhile but are there any regional passes that we should consider that would save us some money? Even though we won’t have a JR pass is it still possible to book the Shinkansen trains and generally how much planning ahead do you need to book these?
Thank you

Hi there,
If you can fit Osaka, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Onomichi, Kyoto, and Hakone into a 14-day window, I would highly recommend a 14-day Nationwide JR Pass. This will cover all of your long-distance journeys.
While there is a regional pass that covers the Osaka, Kyoto, and Hiroshima areas, they would not be a good fit if you are travelling all the way from Tokyo to Hiroshima, as they do not cover the initial Shinkansen leg.
Also, Individual tickets can be purchased upon arrival. Please note that bookings only open one month before the travel date, so you can easily sort these once you are in Japan.
I hope this helps!
Kind Regards,
Mariko
