Should we purchase JR pass?

Hi we will be traveling to Japan from 20 December 2017 till 10 January 2018. One group will be leaving earlier before 7 January 2018. There are 6 adults and 3 kids, aged 3, 5 & 6. Part of the groups have visited Japan before, covering Tokyo, Osaka, Hakone, Kobe.

We will arrive and depart from Tokyo, the group that leaves early hasn't booked the return ticket. We plan to visit Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya & Hokkaido, maybe covering Disney Sea and Universal Studio.

Can you suggest if we should get any JR pass as the return ticket by plane from Tokyo to Hokkaido costs around 11,000 yen?

We are flexible with the itinerary and you may suggest us any places that suit our family.

Hi there,

Making a direct comparison with flying is hard, as flight ticket prices depend on what day you travel. As well as additional time required for flights, such as travel to the airport, procedures and so on. If you want to see what suits you best I would recommend writing out your itinerary completely and see what transport type covers your itinerary best.

The Japan Rail Pass will cover travel to all the cities you travel too, including Hokkaido and you would very good savings compared to purchasing normal tickets.
