Suitcase Reuse/Disposal Service

I'm traveling from the West to East of Japan with the JR Pass visiting several cities and am currently in Okayama. Unfortunately while getting of the last train my suitcase broke of the rolling legs and I was forced to buy a new one, but neither my hotel nor the shop (Samsonite) is willing to take my broken suitcase. Since I still have quite a bit of traveling to do (one and half months) I'm looking for a way to dispose of the old suitcase.

I noticed several airpots like the Kansai Airport provide a Suitcase Reuse Service now, I wonder if JR rail or any train station on the Okayama - Tokyo provide a similar service that I could get rid of the unwanted suitcase? I could a stop there while making my way east and get rid of the annoyance.

I know it's a bit of an open question but still any advice would be much appreciated!

Hi there,

This is what I like so much about the forum, every day there is a new type of question, and this is a new one for me as well.

I'm somewhat surprised that your hotel did not take it, as it is very customary for them to take care of requests like this. For them, it would be easy to call for oversized garbage collection, and it'd be disposed of the next day. A small fee could be charged for it. The same would apply for the shop where you purchased your new suitcase.

The best you could do in Okayama is call the local garbage disposal unit yourself, and either visit, or schedule collection at your hotel yourself. All the information in English + phone number is here: https://www.city.okayama.jp/shisei/cmsfiles/contents/0000028/28639/06_Garbage_Disposal.pdf

Hope this helps and let me know how it goes - seriously interested!

Thank you Daniel for the helpful information, was looking for it myself but could not really find it.

For future reference, I also expect this kind of service to be provided by the hotel, since it's not possible for me to know the local disposal procedure. I'm staying at a 3 star business hotel in Okayama, who was completely not interested in my problem and did not offer any support at all (not even googling what needs to be done like Daniel did). My strategy therefore was to message some of the 4-star hotels in Okayama and after explaining the situation, there was indeed one that is willing exceptionally to dispose of my suitcase against a small fee (even though I am not staying with them). Not gonna say which one it was since it was an exception, but there are not that many 4 star hotels in Okayama anyhow. But definitely Kudos to them for being caring humans!
