Worth using rail pass for Osaka - Takayama?

Konnichiwa !

I will be joining a 5-day tour around Osaka from Jan 10-15 2014, which covers Kobe and Kyoto. At the end of this tour, I plan to visit Ogimachi farmhouse village on my own. I will be travelling with 2 children age 3 and 4. I have trouble deciding if I need to use a rail pass for this leg. I read in other post the following rail cost from Osaka to Takayama.

Osaka - Takayama ¥ 10,010
Takayama - Osaka ¥ 10,010

My current travel itinerary is as follows:
1. Jan 15 - Osaka to Takayama
2. Jan 16 - half day trip to visit Ogimachi
3. Jan 17 - Takayama to Nagoya
4. Jan 18 - around Nagoya metro area
5. Jan 19 - Nagoya to Osaka KIX airport

Appreciate your advise.

Hi there,

Did you know that children below the age of 6 travel for free on the JR when each is accompanied by an adult? Some restrictions apply, such as that you will have take the child on your lap if the train is busy. You can read all the details here.

To see if a JR Pass would be of use, let's have a look at normal ticket prices.

Osaka - Takayama ¥ 10,310
Takayama - Nagoya ¥ 5,870
Nagoya - Osaka KIX ¥ 8,160

For a total of ¥ 24,340, this would not cover the price of a 7 day JR Pass, which is 28,300 yen. For now it would be better to buy normal tickets but the JR Pass would quickly become worth it if you do some additional travel.
