Hello,

I would appreciate some detailed assistance (names of trains, etc) with the following itinerary. Unfortunately, I will have a couple of large bags and a couple of smaller ones, so considering that, if one train is preferable over another, please specify. Regarding luggage, is it preferable to book the green compartment (is there more luggage storage space in the green compartment)? Also, since my journey is one way, should I buy individual tickets or a one week pass? My itinerary is as follows:

one week in Yokohama for a conference (including one day tour of Tokyo)

If I get a one week pass it would be used for the folllowing one week trip:

Yokohama to Kamakura then Kamakura to Hakone (can we store our luggage at the Kamakura station? is it considered a major station? ) OR Yokohama to Hakone (I will consider skipping Kamakura if necessary).

Hakone to Kyoto

Kyoto to Osaka Airport

Thank you for your time. Any suggestions are welcome.

Regards,
CP

Hi there,

Normally if you are doing a return trip from Tokyo to Osaka, a 7 day rail pass would be economical, but as you are only doing a one way trip, I recommend purchasing individual tickets as needed.

Given that you'll be travelling with a lot of luggage, the green car will offer more space, however there is often lots of space in the normal class cars sufficient for your luggage, so I should think you'll be fine, especially considering the extra expense of the green car. If you don't mind separating from your luggage for a few days, you can also look into the next day "Takyuubin" hotel to hotel luggage delivery service that your hotel will be able to arrange for you. This service is very popular in Japan and is extremely safe.

You can look up precise train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia through our video blog.

Hope this helps!

Dear Mari,

Thank you for your reply. It did, indeed, help. I have just one follow-up question. Regarding this website, http://www.jrpass.com/blogs/utilising-station-lockers ,and specifically the following statement

Sizes & Costs
Large (¥500) – approx. 117cm x 43cm x 57cm (44in x 16in x 22in) Available in very small numbers at major stations

does Kamakura station have large lockers? (is it a major station? If it is not a major station and/or does not have large lockers, do you have any suggestions with regard to storing our luggage for a few hours while we tour Kamakura?

Thanks again,
CP

HI there!

Yes - Kamakura will have lockers available but it's down to luck if there are any of the large size available. Looking at your itinerary, how about storing your luggage at Shin-Yokohama and doing a loop back? You'll could come back to Shin-Yokohama to board the shinkansen for Odawara/Hakone and not spend much more time than going direct from Kamakura.

Hope this helps!
