Flying into OSAKA and looking to do a wee bit of traveling. Now been told there are limits on what trains i can use with a JR pass. From reading i cannot use the bullet trains. Now i read this

All JR Group Railways-Shinkansen"bullet trains" (except any reserved or non-reserved seat on “NOZOMI”and”MIZUHO”trains) limited express trains, express trains, and rapid or local trains. (With some exceptions) JAPAN RAIL PASS holders can also use the Tokyo monorail. Aoimori Railway services between Aomori and Hachinohe (but only for direct travel between these two stations on local or rapid services. Travel is not covered if you disembark at any other station on the Aoimori Railway line.)

Which says i can use Shinkansen"bullet trains".

Confused is there different bullet trains have i read the above wrong ? Can i use the JR pass to get to tokyo? How long does this take.

Hi there,

The JR Pass is valid on all Shinkansen lines. What is important though is certain types of trains are not included. These are the Nozomi and Mizuho trains. You can use other Shinkansen trains such as the Hikari and Sakura instead.

So you can certainly use the JR Pass for travel on the Shinkansen between Osaka - Tokyo. The trip takes about 180 minutes.

Daniel thanks for answering my question. Last one if you want to use the trains do you have to reserve a seat ? Looking at the first class JR rail pass 14 days.

Hi again,

All trains have reserved and non reserved seats. With the JR Pass you can use either. So just hop on the train as you like, or reserve a seat in advance and enjoy your own seat without bother.

Green seats are all reserved, so if you travel in Green Class, be sure to reserve a seat in advance.
