Should we get a rail pass?

Hi,

We'll be starting in Tokyo on Oct 25th. From there it'll be:
Tokyo 4 nights
Hakone 3 nights
Nakatsugawas 3 nights
Kyoto 6 nights (probably with day trip to Nara)
Kanazawa 3 nights
Nagano 3 nights
Tokyo 4 nights

We are assuming we'd get a 21 day JR pass, but not sure it would actually be worth it.
Is there a clear answer, does it depend of whether we'd want to make some day trips from Nakatsugawa/Kyoto?
Or, perhaps we just need a 14 days for part of the trip?

Thank you very much

Hi there,

You do take it pretty slow, especially the 6 nights in Kyoto makes it hard to match a JR Pass to you. In addition, most routes are direct routes with stop over. Such as Kyoto - Tokyo, but you have 2 stops, Kanazawa and Nagano.

With all that in mind, I actually think you'd be best just buying normal tickets as you travel. If you were to say: add a day trip to Hiroshima from Kyoto. Then a 14-day pass would make much more sense.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Thank you so much for your replying, and so quickly - we really appreciate it!
One follow-up question if I may - is the upcoming increase of the pass price independent of changes to ticket prices - in other words, should we expect individual ticket prices to be higher in November than they are now?
