Hi,

We will arrive in Narita Airport on 26th May and leave on the 7th June, our plan is currently as follows (accommodation all booked) however we have not yet worked out where or what to see for all days. Our party consists of 5 adults and 2 kids (where 3 adults are 55+ and the kids will be 3 and 4, so basically my family of 4, plus my parents and an aunty). We are having trouble with deciding on where to go and what to do so it works for us all.

26th May - arrive at Narita at about 7pm (4 nights accommodation in Ikebukuro)
27th May - TBC in Tokyo
28th May - TBC in Tokyo
29th May - Sanrio Puroland for half a day?
30th May - Travel to Kyoto (1 night in Kyoto)
31st May - Kyoto (fushimi Inari Shrine --> Nara --> Osaka
1st June - TBC in Osaka (4 nights in Kyoto)
2nd June - TBC in Osaka
3rd June - TBC in Osaka
4th June - Travel to Tokyo Disneyland/Sea (2 nights at Disneyland)
5th June - Disneyland/Sea
6th June - Travel to Narita (1 night at Narita)
7th June - Early flight from Narita

Our plan is to purchase the JRP and activate it on the 30th May when travelling to Kyoto and the 7 days would cover us back to Tokyo Disneyland/Sea. However this means we are not fully utilising the 7 days as the last 2 days we would be in the Disneyland/Sea area and also I think the JRP does not work in Osaka area? We will also use the Suica card for all other travel.

We opted to do a night in Narita as our departing flight is too early to go direct from Disneyland with 3 seniors and 2 young kids.

Keeping in mind, we want less trouble (kids/seniors plus no japanese), is the JRP a good option for us - cost and ease of use? Or should we buy individual tickets/Suica card?

Many thanks!
Suzanne

Hello Suzanne,

I did a blog post about places to visit in Japan for a Family Trip. It includes a lot of places that are fun to visit as a family trip.

As for the JR Pass, I do recommend using a 7 day JR Pass. The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka. From there any additional travel is what you would save. Additionally, the JR Pass is your single ticket to travel all in Japan, so you never have to buy tickets for JR travel.

The JR Pass is also valid on local trains in Osaka, which is enough to see Osaka city.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your reply.

Quick question - is there any benefit with buying the Green Class vs. Ordinary?

As our kids are under 6 and will not need a ticket, we were thinking maybe of buying Green Class instead, as from research it seems that these are less crowded and they will have a better chance of a free seat?

Thanks,
Suzanne

Hi Suzanna,

Green Class is more spacious, comfortable and also less crowded. However there is only one Green Car per train set and I don't know if they give you a better chance for a seat.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
