We are going to Japan April 4th and have the following itinerary. Arrive Tokyo, Narita April 5th.pril
April 5th -8th Tokyo
April 8-9Kyoto
April 10 Koyasan
April 11 Kyoto
April 12 Osaka
April 13,14 Takayama
April 15th Fuji or Gero Onsen, Gifu
April 16-17 Yokohama with a day trip to Kamakura
April 18 Nikko
After this I have not made final plans, but we will be going up to Ishinomaki and possibly Hirosaki.
We will return to Tokyo on April 23rd when we will head back to Narita to fly home to Canada.
This trip is 19 Days. Is it worthwhile to get a 2 or 3 week pass. Some of our trips will be on private lines not covered by the JR pass. I thank you for your advice as I know I need to order our rail passes soon.

Hi there,

Nice trip! You will be just in time for the Sakura season!
I must say that this question is hard to answer especially since you don't have a final itinerary yet.
In the end it comes down to flexibility versus budget. The difference between the 14-day and 21-day pass is 12,600 Yen, basically if you can do this amount of travel in the extra days it will be worth it!

I don't think that this would be very hard if you plan on going all the way up to Hirosaki, for instance a one way trip from there to Tokyo is ¥ 17,490, you would also be able to use the JR-Pass on the way back to the Airport saving around an other 3,000Yen compared to normal ticket prices.

If you wish to budget your trip, a 14-day pass may be this best option, I think the best way to use it would be from day 8-21 but it would mean returning to Tokyo by then.

Hope this helps!
-Daniel
