I am going to Tokyo to Kyoto on Dec 28. It is busy time. I am worry about not be able to get reserved seat once I activate the in Nariata Airport on Dec 23. Can I just buy on-line now for a reserved seat one-way ticket from Tokyo to Kyoto instead of using JR Pass? Is 12 years consider an adult or child ticket?

Hi there,
You will be fine, when you activate your JR Pass on the 23rd and make reservations at the same time for the 28th.
Around the new year period, a 2-4 day advance reservation is recommended.
A 12 year old is considered an adult when it comes to train fares.
