Hi,
I'll be visiting Kyushu in October and was wondering if it was fine going there after the recent flooding?
I wonder if things are back to normal and I should expect most places to be closed or being repared?

Thanks!

Hi there!

There are currently still some damaged lines in Kyushu, however for all affected tracks there is a replacement bus service.

The vast majority of lines are operational, including the Kyushu bullet train, however according to JR-Kyushu the following 2 lines are affected:

  • The Kyudaihonsen line map is running a reduced service but is expected to return to full service on the 27th of August.
  • The Hohihonsen line (google translate) & map is not running between HIgoozu and Ogata. There is currently no ETA on the repairs to this line.

Aso station lies on the Hohihonsen line between Higoozu and Ogata and is currently not accesible by rail. JR is running a replacement bus service from Higoozu to Miyaji station, and will stop at stations en route, including Aso station.

I think it's reasonable to expect all the above lines to be repaired by October, however you should check back here nearer your time of travel and I will check again for you.

Hope this helps!

Thanks!
Do you know if the Onsen or other touristic attraction there have been affected as well?

Hi there,

The storms mainly affected the center of Kyushu. Kurokawa onsen fortunately was unaffected by the flooding and Beppu was outside the main storm area and was also unaffected.

Hope this helps!
