Hi
Plz can you advise which JR pass is best for me. We are 3 adults traveling. Our itinerary is:
10 Aug: Land Tokyo Narita
10 - 14 Aug: In Tokyo
15 Aug: Shinjuku - Matsumoto (Ltd Exp Super Azusa5)
17 & 18 Aug: In Kanazawa
18 Aug: Kanazawa - Kyoto (Ltd Exp Thunderbird 34)
19 -21 Aug: In Kyoto
22 Aug: Kyoto – Osaka (Haruka Express)
Thank you very much.
Which JR pass?
Hi there,
My recommendation here would be to buy normal tickets. This because their cost will be lower than a JR Pass. Looking at prices quickly, Shinjuku - Matsumoto is roughly 7.000yen, Matsumoto to Kanazawa 10.000yen and Kanazawa to Kyoto an other 7.000yen. The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is 29.110.
A JR Pass would have been great if you returned to Tokyo or did a side trip on the Shinkansen. Such as to Himeji or Hiroshima.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
Thanks so much for your help Daniel. Sorry 2 more questions, if we are doing normal tickets can we then buy them in Japan? Also do the public transport systems in Tokyo, Kanazawa and Kyoto not work on the JR pass?
Hello,
Of course you can buy regular tickets in Japan - that is what everyone not using a pass does.
There is only a very limited use for the pass within Tokyo and Kyoto, and really none for Kanazawa. You can ride the Yamanote Line in Tokyo, which goes to several popular tourist areas, and in Kyoto you can take a JR train to Arashiyama on the west side and down the Nara line to the Uji, the Fushimi Inari Shrine, and of course to Nara.
Please note that you cannot use the JR pass for city subways, municipal buses, etc.
Good luck.
