Nationwide pass?

If you are travelling across and between multiple JR zones I recommend you purchase the Nationwide Japan Rail Pass (which you can purchase here). This pass will give you travel across and between all zones, and is often only marginally more expensive than a single zone pass.

Certainly for a journey such as you describe, the nationwide JR Pass will give you the most savings vs individual zones.

That's what I thought. Thanks for clarification. Ill be travelling this October with my friend who lives in Taiwan. When should I buy my pass? And can I buy two here in US for both of us? Thanks in advance.

The Japan rail pass can be activated in Japan anytime up to 3 months from the date of purchase. This means that if you are intending to travel in October, you should aim to place your order anytime from the 1st of August. You can have both jr passes delivered to you in the US and can pass it onto your friend when you meet in Japan if you wish.
