I will be arriving at Narita on June 5th 1:30pm and need to go directly to Kyoto. On June 9th, I will be traveling to Tokyo and heading back to Narita on June 12th. Do I need to activate my JR pass at Narita in order to go to Kyoto? Because I'm staying 8 days I'm not sure if I should get the 7 or 14 day pass. Also would I need to use the JR pass from Tokyo to Narita?

Hello Densie,

The 7 day JR Pass would make for a good option if you can use it to travel from Narita Airport - Kyoto and from Kyoto - Tokyo.

You will have to buy a ticket back from Tokyo - Narita Airport since the return to the airport will be on day 8. This costs around 1,200yen using local trains or 3,000yen using the Narita Express. There's also a 1000yen bus from Tokyo station. However I would recommend taking the train, as buses can get stuck in traffic.

The JR Pass can be activated at Narita Airport. Here's a short "how to" Guide.
