My family of 4 will be traveling to Japan in May. We arrive in Osaka and stay for 4 nights, with a day trip to Hiroshima. Then we are staying in Hakone for 2 nights, and on to Tokyo for 6 nights. From Tokyo we will take days trips to Nikko and Nagano. Thus:

Wed May 15 Arrive in Osaka
Sat May 18 Osaka - Hiroshima (roundtrip)
Sun May 19 Osaka - Hakone
Tues May 21 Hakone - Tokyo
Thu May 23 Tokyo - Nagano (roundtrip)
Fri May 24 Tokyo - Nikko (roundtrip)
Mon May 27 Depart

The rest of the time we will tour in Osaka and Tokyo.

My question is, should a get the 7 or 14 day JR Pass? It looks like it will be for itself for the days mentioned, but I'm not sure if I should get the extra 7 days. Are there enough local trains it covers to justify the expense?

Hi there,

You will be traveling a good lot and the 14-day JR Pass would work out very well here. The day trips you make especially would add up a lot of extra cost if not. Think of Hiroshima, Nagano and Nikko.

I've made a quick breakdown of ticket prices below vs the cost of buying a JR Pass:
Osaka - Hiroshima (return) ¥ 20,060
Osaka - Hakone (Odawara station) ¥ 12,420
Hakone (Odawara station) - Tokyo ¥ 3,540
Tokyo - Nagano ¥ 8,000
Nagano - Tokyo ¥ 8,000
Tokyo - Nikko ¥ 5,380
Nikko - Tokyo ¥ 5,380

For a total of ¥ 62,780 or at least ¥ 16,390 in savings, as the 14 day JR Pass is ¥ 46,390. That's excluding any other local travel you may do with it. With the above in mind, I think a 14-day JR Pass certainly justifies it's price :)
