as a Japanese living abroad for 10+ years, can I buy the JR Pass online and present the proof of residency once I arrive in Japan?
I've read in some websites that the purchase must take place in person in an agency because you have to show them the document.

The purchase of the JR Pass isn't the problem, we can easily ship you your exchange order I believe. It's more of a problem at the border - I believe it depends on nationality/ the passport you hold. If you hold a Japanese Passport then it's highly unlikely they'll let you exchange and activate it. If not, and you are able to have your passport stamped as a 'temporary visitor', you should be okay.
