Hi there,

My partner and I will be travelling to Japan for 25 days.
Of that time we will be spending 6 days in Tokyo, then off to Kanazawa, takayama, kyoto (another 6 days), Nara, Hiroshima, Miyajima, Osaka, Hakone then back to tokyo for departure.
I realise the JRPass will be best for majority of the travel, but I am slightly confused for a few of the locations and around Central Tokyo. Will the pass cover travel on most of the local train networks or would it be Ideal for me to locate an alternative source such as the Pasmo service?

Many thanks!
Mik

Hi Mik,

The JR Pass will be good for travel on all JR lines around Tokyo. Here's a map of JR lines in Tokyo for reference.

In general, with good planning you can cover much of your travel in Tokyo on JR lines, but you will still want to supplement this with a Pasmo or Suica prepaid card for using the Metro. The good news is that these cards are pay-as-you-go, so you only need to charge up as you make more travel. It's a good idea to keep one in the backpocket along with a JR Pass - with that combo you should be problem free.

You can find out more about the Pasmo and Suica here.

Hope this helps!
