We plan to travel to Japan in February, arriving in Tokyo on 10 Feb. Our transport from Narita airport to Tokyo has been paid for, but I would like to know if it will be cheaper for me to buy a JR pass for the following:

11 Feb - local travel in Tokyo
12 Feb Tokyo (Shinjuku) to Kyoto
13 Feb Kyoto to Nara and back
14 Feb Kyoto to Arashiyama and back
15 Feb Around Kyoto
16 Feb Kyoto to Kanazawa
17 Feb Kanazawa to Takayama
18 Feb Around Takayama
19 Feb Takayama to Tokyo
20 Feb local travel in Tokyo.

I have used Hyperdia to calculate the fares and it looks as if they are a little bit cheaper than the price of a 14-day JR pass. Is this correct? Can I do all of this route using the JR pass? Is there a way to do this with a 7-day pass and another single pass or ticket? I look forward to hearing your advice

Hi there!

Ideally you'd use a 7 day JR Pass to cover all your travel outside of Tokyo with it and just buy normal tickets for Tokyo, this would by far the the most cost efficient way of travel. Could I ask if your travel dates are already set? If possible I would recommend returning to Tokyo using an afternoon train from Takayama on the 18th. This way you could use a 7 Day JR Pass from the 12th - 18th and make great savings.

With the 14 day JR Pass you would look at the following:

Narita Airport - Tokyo ¥ 2,740
Shinjuku - Kyoto ¥ 13,020
Kyoto - Nara ¥ 1,380 (return)
Kyoto - Arashiyama ¥ 460 (return)
Kyoto - Kanazawa ¥ 6,510
Kanazawa - Takayama ¥ 5,440
Takayama - Tokyo ¥ 14,000
Tokyo - Narita Airport ¥ 2,740

For a total of ¥ 46,290 or ¥ 1,190 in savings as the 14 day JR Pass is ¥ 45,100. You would probably end up saving a little more since you can also use the pass for local travel trough Tokyo on the local JR Network. In addition you just need 1 ticket for all your travel, which is pure convenience!
