Hayubasa Grand Class!!!

I'm afraid you will not be able to use the Gran Class on Hayabusa for free with the Green Car Japan Rail Pass (but the Green Car in Hayabusa is very nice and is free for Green Car JRPass holders :) ).

If you do want to use Gran Class, the JR Pass will cover the basic fare (usually about 1/2 of the total ticket cost), however you will have to pay separately for the limited express and seat fare components of the ticket. This can vary depending on how far you intend to go. If you let me know where you are thinking of using it I can give you an idea of the cost you may face.

Thanks for the reply! Specifically was planning to make the trip from Tokyo to Sapporo, wanted to know if I had to pay extra because I really want to experience a trip to at least one way in that exceptional class

The extra charge for granclass on the Hayabusa portion of that trip between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori will come to ¥16,490. Note that as with all seats on the Hayabusa you'll need to place a reservation for this seat. As they are quite popular I recommend making a reservation as soon as you arrive.
