Hi there, we are 3 of us (2 seniors over 50 & 1 student) in Japan for 3 weeks! The 3 week pass is sooooo expensive ie USD $659 each for cheapest pass $1977 total!

While I like the idea of the pass would it be easier just to pay as we go? While we might take the bullet train once for experience (and anyway this is not included) we are happy to take the slow road. So far rough itinerary will be flying in and out of Tokyo with travel to Mt Fuji, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima (not necessarily in that order), then Kumano - Kii Peninsula last and then back to Tokyo!

If we paid as we went on slow trains/bus - approximate cost - perhaps we won’t use public transport every day?

Cheers Jane

Hi Jane,

While the amount of the JR Pass can be considered high, it is a very economical ticket compared to buying normal fares. Also, the price you mentioned of $ 659 is for Green Class / First Class travel. A 21-day normal class pass is $429.00, at the current exchange rate. Breaking that down on a day basis, that's roughly $21/day for unlimited travel nationwide! There's nothing comparable like that in the US. You are also travelling significant distances, especially between cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and the Kii peninsula.

I can't say for sure what your best option will be, given that is depends on your actual route, travel dates and more. However, I recommend reading this article to help you find the best transport options: https://www.jrpass.com/blog/hyperdia-alternatives-how-to-plan-for-jr-pass-travel

Hope this helps,
Daniel
