Ease of Transfer between trains

I notice on Hyperdia some of these transfers between trains are within minutes. How easy is it to transfer between platforms to board next train.?

If you have JR pass do you have to go through ticket outlet before transfer or just find next departure track and board?

Realistically how long would it take to go from say track 5 to track 13 with luggage?

Total novice with this so any advice would be great.

Hi there!

It really depends on which station you're thinking of changing trains, but in general you can use this rule of thumb:

  1. If you are changing between Bullet Trains, you will stay in the Bullet terminal so changes will be swift (within 5-10 mins). In this case you will not have to go through a ticket gate.
  2. If you are changing between Normal Trains, you will stay in the normal train terminal so changes will be swift (5-10 mins). In this case you will not have to go through a ticket gate.
  3. If you are changing between Bullet Train and Normal Train (or vice versa), you will need to change between terminals, and so the transfer may take longer (10-15mins). In this case you will have to go through a ticket gate.
