Here is our plan
day 1: Osaka->Hiroshima
day 2: Hiroshima->Kyoto
day 6: Kyoto->Kanazawa
day 8: Kanazawa->Tokyo
we were thinking of reducing trip by one day, so we can use 7-day pass. but it looks like even then, cost of individual tickets (reserved seats=40500 Yen) would be only slightly more than 7-day green car pass.
is this correct calculation?

Lets have a look at ticket prices and find out!
day 1: Osaka->Hiroshima ¥ 9,950
day 2: Hiroshima->Kyoto ¥ 10,790
day 6: Kyoto->Kanazawa ¥ 6,710
day 8: Kanazawa->Tokyo ¥ 12,710
For a total of ¥ 40,160 or ¥ 11,860 in savings as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300. Note that these are all prices for travel on ordinary train cars. Prices for traveling on Green cars are generally 30-50% higher.
