Hello there,

I will be travelling to Japan in early April for 18 days during which we are planning to make the following trains:

Day 1: Haneda airport - Tokyo centre
Days 2 to 5: Tokyo sightseeing in centre and metropolitan area
Day 6: Tokyo - Nara (via Kyoto)
Days 7 to 12: WIth friends in Nara & Osaka (by car and local trains)
Day 13: Nara - Kyoto
Day 14: Kyoto centre sightseeing
Day 15: Kyoto - Tokyo
Day 16: Tokyo - Mount Takao - Tokyo (day trip)
Day 17: Tokyo - Yokohama - Tokyo (day trip)
Day 18: Tokyo centre - Haneda airport

Could you advise whether it would be worth getting a 14 day rail pass for the above?

We would like to be able to use the Shinkansen but not necessarily the super fast Nozomi or Mizuno trains.

Hi there,

You can use the Shinkansen with the JR-Pass, no problemo! As you mentioned though you can't ride the Nozomi or Mizuho but the Hikari train will get you everywhere in good time too!

Here is a little list of ticket prices without the JR-Pass:
Tokyo --> Nara ¥ 14,050 (via Kyoto)
Nara --> Kyoto ¥ 690
Kyoto --> Tokyo ¥ 13,220
Tokyo Mount Takao (return) ¥ 1,780
Tokyo Yokohama ¥ 900

For a total of 30,640, although it does not include local travel in Osaka you are still well short of the price of the 14-day pass. You would be able to save some money if you could plan your long distance travel (Tokyo - Nara and Kyoto - Tokyo it its period of use. Otherwise you would be best of by just buying the tickets when you travel.
