14 day pass looks same price as single tickets

Hello

There are some very helpful questions and answers here, so I hope you can help us?

We have planned our itinerary below. Looking up the rail ticket prices on Hyperdia single tickets seem the same price as a 14 day JR pass or have we made a mistake!

Over a 14 day period we are planning to travel between the places below.

4 days Tokyo
1 day Hakone
2 days Takayama
4 days Kyoto
2 days Kanazawa
2 days Tokyo

Tokyo - Hakone Y 2020
Hakone - Takayama Y 12410
Takayama - Kyoto Y 9650
Kyoto - Kanazawa Y6710
Kanazawa - Tokyo Y12710

Total Y44,250

However I can't see any way to buy a 7 day pass and then add a single ticket!

Hi Jerry,

Here's a quick check of your prices:

  1. Tokyo > Odawara: ¥3,840 (35mins, 83km)
  2. Odawara > Takayama: ¥12,110 (240mins, 448km)
  3. Takayama > Kyoto: ¥9,980 (190mins, 314km)
  4. Kyoto > Kanazawa: ¥6,910 (124mins, 224km)
  5. Kanazawa > Tokyo: ¥12,710 (247mins, 460km)

JR ticket cost: ¥45,550 for 5 legs

These prices will differ slightly due to exact trains used, however it seems like your calculations are generally correct. Note that if you did use the 14 day pass any further JR travel will be free. For example you will be able to get some use of the JR Pass around Tokyo, and could also use it to travel to or from the airport.

Currently JR tickets are only available to purchase online in Japanese, however you will be able to easily purchase these tickets from the JR ticket office on arrival in Japan.
