Will a 14 day pass work for me?

Hello!

I'm interested in which pass I should get. I am travelling with my partner and our itinerary over 17 nights is:

Tokyo - 5 nights
Takayama - 2 nights
Kanazawa - 1 night
Kyoto - 4 nights
Koya-San - 1 night
Kyoto - 1 night
Izu peninsula (Ito) - 2 nights then back to Tokyo to fly out!

I plan on one day trip from Tokyo (Kamakura) and Kyoto (Osaka, Nara) and I would like ride the shinkansen as much as possible and enjoy the wide-view Hida while in the west.

Does the 14 day pass make sense? I dont mind using the Suica+NEX to get into Tokyo, then activating the JR Pass on my final day or the day before in Tokyo.

Thanks so much! Simon.

Hi Simon,

I think a JR Pass could be useful for you, even though some local travel to Koya and maybe in Izu is not covered by the JR Pass. I made a small inventory of ticket prices to see if it makes sense to buy one.

Tokyo - Takayama ¥ 14,000
Takayama - Kanazawa ¥ 5,440 (price differs on route+train taken between 2,500 - 10,000)
Kanazawa - Kyoto ¥ 6,510
Kyoto - Osaka (for Koyasan) ¥ 540
Osaka - Kyoto (Way back from Koyasan) ¥ 540
Kyoto - Izu (Ito) ¥ 11,550
Izu (ito) - Narita Airport ¥ 6,710

For a total of ¥ 45,290 - The 14 Day JR Pass is ¥ 45,100 so you are about even. However you can also use to JR Pass around Tokyo (to Kamakura) and Kyoto (to Nara) on JR lines, so you would be able to make some good savings that way. The other reason I would recommend the JR Pass, is pure convenience. Just showing your JR Pass and getting your tickets is very nice, instead of having to line up and buy tickets every time.

I think you already did some good research, since you know about the Narita Express + Suica and Hida Wide train but let me know if I can help with anything else!

Thanks Daniel - that is such a helpful answer.

If I was to buy a 14 day pass and activate pass on the morning of 15th July when will it end? Midnight on the 28th?

Hi Again,

Yes that's correct. The JR Pass is valid for 14 days. The first day of use is counted as a full day, so it would be valid until 28th 23.59. You can however finish your ride without any fees, if you were to board the train before midnight.

You can read more about it here.

I hope this helps,
Daniel
