Hello,

We are planning a 10 days trip between 25th December and 3rd January. We arrive at Narita and leave from Kansai Airport. We want to spend a few days in Tokyo, then go skiing in Happo-one and finish with a few days in Kyoto. Our question is regarding the transportation between those sites:

  1. What is the most convenient way to join Happo-one/Hakuba from Tokyo? Could this travel be covered by the JR pass?

  2. Same for the travel between Hakuba and Kyoto, what train should we take and would it be covered by JR pass?

  3. Would it be economical to buy JR passes for those 2 travels only?

  4. Regarding the booking of these trains, can it be done before we arrive in Japan and how?

Thanks,

Marion

Hi Marion,

I see you have a couple of question, let's get started right away.

1.) There are different options available. The most convenient is to take the Azusa train from Shinjuku to Hakuba. There's a direct service around 7:30. Services later in the day will require 1 or 2 transfers.

2.) Here's the route Hakuba - Kyoto.

3.) The JR Pass covers all these routes but the price of a JR Pass is higher than normal tickets.

4.) You can book these trains at any station in Japan. Just go to the ticket window and tell the staff when and where you wish to travel. They will then book the tickets for you.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
