Hi,

I will be going to Japan from the 17th March till 25th March. I will be flying to Tokyo and plan to stay in Tokyo for the last 3 days of the trip. However I would like to go to either Hokkaido during the first 6 days of the trip. I would like to know if it would be worthwhile for me to get the 7 days JR pass for the below itinerary:

Tokyo to Saporo
Saporo to Noreibetsu
Noreibetsu to Hakodate
Hakodate to Tokyo

Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks.

Hi there,

A 7 day rail pass costs ¥28,300, so you'll need to spend more than that on individual tickets for it to make sense. Here are your ticket costs:

  1. Narita airport terminal 1 > Tokyo: ¥2740, (62mins, 79km)
  2. Tokyo > Sapporo(jr): ¥22970, (593mins, 1196km)
  3. Sapporo(jr) > Noboribetsu: ¥4560, (66mins, 111km)
  4. Noboribetsu > Hakodate: ¥6900, (133mins, 207km)
  5. Hakodate > Tokyo: ¥18840, (351mins, 878km)
  6. Tokyo > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥2740, (58mins, 79km)

TOTAL: ¥58750 for 6 legs

Assuming you do the trip above, then I would certainly recommend a 7 day rail pass.

You can look up train timetables and costs at the hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for Japan Rail Pass holders through our video blog.

Hope this helps!

Thank you! However, I was reading somewhere that some JR services to Hokkaido had been disrupted due to the earthquake last year and will only resume in May. Just wondering if that's still the case now? Thanks.
