Hello,
I'm helping someone go from Kyoto to Sapporo on July 19 and then from Sapporo to Tokyo on July 22. Can you tell me how long each journey is and if they would have to change trains. Also in this situation is it best to get a 7 day JR pass or buy individual tickets. How much would these cost?

For travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included.
The JR Pass would be very cost effective on this route.
