My wife and I will be traveling to Japan for the first time next week. Our itinerary will be as follows:

Arrive Tokyo Narita Jan 16th 5pm

Stay four nights in Tokyo Jan 16-20

Travel to Hakone Jan 20 stay one night

Travel to Kyoto Jan 21 stay five nights

Travel to Nagano Jan 26 stay two nights

Travel back to Tokyo Jan 28 stay one night

Fly out of of Tokyo Narita Jan 29 at 5pm

Would it be better to buy JR passes or buy individual tickets or a combination of the two?

Thanks,
-Alex

Hi Alex,

I must say that your itinerary looks a little hard to plan with a JR Pass but let's find out what the possibilities are:

Narita Airport - Tokyo ¥ 3,140
Tokoy - Odawara ¥ 3,130
Odawara - Kyoto ¥ 11,950
Kyoto - Nagano ¥ 10,930
Nagano - Tokyo ¥ 8,170
Tokyo - Narita Airport ¥ 3,140

This all adds up to ¥ 40,460, ideally you'd use a 7 Day JR Pass to cover your your most expansive legs (Hakone - Kyoto - Nagano - Tokyo) however since these travel days most that 7 days apart it would not really work. So you could either buy normal tickets as you travel or try to rearrange a little to cover the more expansive routes with a JR Pass.

Alternatively you could consider a 14 Day JR Pass (¥ 45,100) and cover the all of your journey. With a little more travel it would quickly become worth it. For instance a day trip to Nikko or Hiroshima would already make the JR Pass pay of and help you make the most of your JR Pass.

I hope this helps!
Daniel
