Hi,

I am deep into this trip planning and realise I need help from expert about which pass to get as there are too many extensive information which usually in Japanese.
Below is my itinerary and here is my questions.
1. Should I buy the 21days national pass? or should I buy individual regional pass?
2. I guess some of them are not included in the JR pass, say, trip J, K and L. Is that if I googled and the transportation provider is not JR, it is not included?
3. Does the JR pass include the transportation within City? say, Tokyo, Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka
4. Is the itinerary on 2Mar too tight? Will I have enough time to travel between that two place?

22Feb NRT airport -A-> Tokyo
23Feb Tokyo -B-> Narita airport > New Chitose Airport -C-> Sapporo
24Feb Sapporo
25Feb Sapporo -D-> Otaru -E-> Sapporo
26Feb Sapporo -F-> Bankei ski area -G-> Sapporo
27Feb Sapporo
28Feb Sapporo -H-> Hakodate
1Mar Hakodate -I-> Yamagata
2Mar Yamagata -J-> Mogamigawa -K-> Ginzan Onsen -L-> Yamagata
3Mar Yamagata -M-> Zao Snow Monsters -N-> Yamagata
4Mar Yamagata -O-> Tokyo
5Mar Tokyo
6Mar Tokyo
7Mar Tokyo -P-> Hakone
8Mar Hakone -Q-> Nagoya
9Mar Nagoya -R-> Shirakawa Village -S-> Nagoya
10Mar Nagoya
11Mar Nagoya -T-> Osaka
12Mar Osaka -U-> Tokyo
13Mar Tokyo -V-> NRT airport

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards,
Joyce

Hi Joyce,

That does look like a busy and fun trip! Let's have a look at your questions:

1.) I do think a 21-day JR Pass (nationwide), is the best option. This because you're travelling all over the place and will visit many different regions.

2.) These trips ( J, K and L) are for the majority covered by the Japan Rail Pass. There may be extra costs, for example to get/to from the closest station to your planned destination but still the JR Pass will cover most of the distance. I'm not sure what tool you use for your planning, but try to find the closest JR Stations and plan from there. For example: Mogamigawa is a river, so with that information, I'm not exactly sure where you'd want to go.

3.) Local JR lines are included, and can get you to most places in major cities like Tokyo, and Osaka. Other transport, like the metro is not covered. The same goes to Shirakawago -> Nagoya. You can use the JR Pass between Takayama - Nagoya, but the bus to/from Shirakawago is not included.

4.) I don't see a problem here, but be sure to plan it out ahead of time (including timetable schedules etc).

Kind regards,
Daniel
