Have a look at these two sample itineraries:

1.) 7 day travel itinerary, it also includes Kyoto and Tokyo and 2.) A Family trip with the JR Pass.

I can also give you some more specific recommendations if you let me know what you are interested in. It is pretty easy to include Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo in 8 days.

Aside from sight seeing we also like to go shopping to the outket store. As of now we plan to explore osaka 1st and then Kyoto, kobe and nara

If you like outlet stores. Head to Rinku Town near Osaka. It is a great place for shopping at a discount!
