My son and girlfriend are planning on spending 7 days travelling from Tokyo to Kyushu. They're thinking
Tokyo - Nara - Naoshima - (then in no order) possibly Takachiho - Beppu - Aso - Nagasaki
Do you think they should buy a 7-day JR pass for this?

Hello there,
That's a lot of travel and the Japan Rail Pass is the only pass that'd be valid for trains along the entire route.
Especially if some backtracking is involved around Kyushu, then the pass would be great.
