Hi

I would like to know the best deal for the above itinerary.

Day 1: kansai airport - Nara
Day 2: Nara - Kyoto (attend a concert in Pacifico yokohama) and back
Day 3: kyoto sightseeing
Day 4: Kyoto sightseeing
Day 5: Kyoto - kinosaki onsen
Day 6: kinosaki onsen - Osaka
Day 7: Osaka - Kobe
Day 8: Osaka - rinku outlet
Day 9: depart from kansai

Initially I was planning to get icoca + Haruka for day 1 and return on day 9. Kyoto city bus pass on day 2&3. JR west wide area pass from day 5 - day 8. However, I'm going for a concert in Yokohama which is plan last minute so what should be the best pass to obtain for the above trip. And it's not possible to take the shinkaSen at night as the last direct train leaves at 9 pm, is it true?

Hi there!

If you're going to also go to Yokohama, then your only real option is a 7 day JR Pass from day 2-8 combined with the Haruka+ICOCA return from the airport. Lets look at how much you may save on dat 2-8:

  1. Nara > Kyoto: ¥690 (44mins, 41km)
  2. Kyoto > Yokohama: ¥12,390 (162mins, 492km)
  3. Yokohama > Kyoto: ¥12,390 (164mins, 492km)
  4. Kyoto > Kinosakionsen: ¥4,510 (146mins, 158km)
  5. Kinosakionsen > Osaka: ¥5,250 (173mins, 183km)
  6. Osaka > Kobe(hyogo): ¥390 (24mins, 33km)
  7. Kobe(hyogo) > Osaka: ¥390 (25mins, 33km)

JR ticket cost: ¥36,010 for 7 legs

As you can see you'll make good minimum savings of ¥7,710 with the 7 day JR Pass, with all further travel being free so I can recommend this provided it works with your time schedule. The last valid for JR Pass Hikari bullet from Shin-Yokohama station to Kyoto leaves Shin-yokohama at 20:22. The last Nozomi bullet leaves at 21:38 however this will not be valid for use by JR Pass holders and you will need to purchase a full fare. How about arranging to spend a night in Yokohama? It's a pretty great city and would be a good addition to your trip.
